Phimai Historical Park
Peter drove us into Phimai at 7am, to beat the heat. Coffee from one of the 7/11 shops that are on every street, then we entered the ancient city, Prasat Hin Phimai, one of Thailand's biggest and most important religious sanctuaries, dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, with some 13th century additions. We could have been on the set of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', and it was all totally accessible — we clambered up old stone steps and in amongst the many 'prangs', the Khmer name for the tower-like spires.

It looks to be deserted? Was it the time of day?
ReplyDeleteMy end it says "comment as paulberman49" but then I become "unknown" Have I been erased?
ReplyDeleteYou’ve been erased in the notification I get! Also showing as ‘Unknown’ on here.
ReplyDeleteWe were there until mid morning and there was only a handful of people and a small group of school kids, so don’t know if it ever gets busier. But Peter seemed to think it’s not visited much. He said tourists flock to Angkor Wat in Cambodia (similar era) yet Phimai remains relatively unknown.
I took lots of photos of early pots with you in mind — am sorting into albums in between swims in the almost-deserted beaches so watch this space! (Did you manage to get to the link? I couldn’t get the live link to work, but you can copy and paste)
This is a brilliant blog, thank you, Sharon. Checking in every day to see if there are updates and to look through the extra photo albums again.
ReplyDeleteMay I send the link to my friend Amanda? She has family living in Thailand and she plans to visit when she can. Mary Mac xx
Yes, feel free!
DeleteI see that I have become Unknown too. As I'm ususally so predictable it's quite novel being mysterious for a change. :-)
ReplyDeleteNot sure why comments come up as 'unknown'! Nice to be mysterious though …
